Eruption of Merapi in 1957
Today is the third anniversary of the eruption of Mount Merapi which occurred on July 11 and 19, 1998. This eruption is an eruption with a new direction since the eruption of Merapi in 1957.
The flow of hot clouds slides towards the headwaters of the Sat, Blongkeng, and Senowo rivers which are on the west side of Mount Merapi. The farthest deposit of hot cloud flow reaches the confluence of the Sat River and the White River above Jurangjero, which is 6 km from the summit.
Prior to the eruption, the increase in seismic activity, deformation, SO2 gas emission, and solfatara temperature were monitored through the existing monitoring equipment. The eruptions of 11 and 19 July 1998 did not cause any casualties, but resulted in ash rain in several areas in the western sector of Mount Merapi.
Studying the history of previous eruptions is one of the important steps in disaster mitigation. Let's identify the dangers, we reduce the risks so we can live side by side with Merapi.
